What is Higher or Lower?
Higher or Lower is one of the four original games on FootyRecall, combining your knowledge of player statistics and memory to build the biggest streak possible. It tests just how well you know the numbers.
With three core categories — Appearances, Goals and Assists — you are tasked with deciding which player has the higher total. Two Premier League players, two sets of career numbers, but only one can be higher or lower. One player's total is visible, while the other is hidden — but who recorded more?
Get it correct and you move on as your score builds. Get it wrong and the round ends. The game is simple. The difficulty comes down to just how well you remember the numbers.
Gameplay Overview
The current game mode tests your knowledge across a range of Premier League categories, with new and unique metrics continuing to be added. Each round gives you one comparison: one player with a known statistic, and another player with that statistic hidden. Choose Higher if you think the next player recorded more, or Lower if you think they recorded fewer. Once you make your prediction, the hidden total is revealed and you find out whether your sequence is still alive.
In Unlimited mode, the newly revealed player becomes the next benchmark and the sequence continues. Keep making the correct Higher or Lower calls to build the longest streak possible.
In the Daily Challenge, every user faces the same set of comparisons. You have 10 comparisons, and the aim is to get as many correct as possible.
Game Modes
Daily Challenge
The fresh Daily Challenge gives every user the same 10 comparisons. If you make a wrong guess, the game does not end. You continue through all 10, giving you the chance to improve your score with every prediction.
Once all 10 guesses are complete, your number of correct answers is converted into a Higher or Lower score, which contributes towards your overall Daily Recall Score. The Daily Challenge can be completed once per day and resets at 12:00pm UK time.
Unlimited
The Unlimited game mode is built around one thing: growing your streak. Users can choose their preferred category at the top of the game, begin their sequence and keep making predictions to build their score.
Each correct answer extends the streak, while one wrong answer ends the current run. There is no fixed number of rounds, so the challenge is simple: see how far you can take your Premier League knowledge and keep pushing for a new personal best.
What Categories Are There?
Appearances
Appearances tests how well you know and remember the careers of different Premier League players. The biggest names in Premier League history are not always the players with the most appearances. Plenty of players built long, consistent careers at traditionally smaller clubs and can rank much higher than you might expect. When choosing Higher or Lower, think about how long each player spent in the Premier League, whether they were a regular starter, and whether significant parts of their career were spent in other countries or competitions.

Goals
Goals may appear to be the 'easiest' category, but comparing players from different positions and eras can quickly make it more difficult. A striker may have only spent a few seasons in the Premier League but still scored significantly more goals than a winger or midfielder with far more appearances. When choosing Higher or Lower, think about both goalscoring ability and career length, rather than simply picking the more famous attacking player.

Assists
Assists will often be the most challenging category, as they are usually less commonly remembered than appearances or goals. Creative midfielders naturally feature more heavily, but the longevity of a player's career can make a huge difference. Assists can also be misleading, as a player known for creativity may not have accumulated as many across their Premier League career as you might expect. A player with a very big name may actually have recorded relatively few assists, while a less celebrated player with a longer Premier League career may rank much higher.

The Data
Higher or Lower uses Premier League career statistics rather than totals from all competitions. That means FA Cup, League Cup, European competitions, international football and appearances in other domestic leagues are not included. FootyRecall uses curated player data based primarily on published Premier League statistics. Data is reviewed as the game database develops, and any suspected errors can be reported through the Report a Bug option found at the bottom of the page.
Scoring & Results
Daily Scoring
Every correct Daily comparison has equal value. Your result is based on the number of correct answers you achieve across the 10 comparisons. That result is then converted into a maximum of 25 Recall Points towards your overall Daily Recall Score.
Wrong answers do not eliminate you from the Daily Challenge. You can attempt every Daily comparison even after getting the previous one incorrect — the next player and their actual statistics will appear ready for you to continue.
Unlimited Scoring
Unlimited is different: it tests your longevity. Each correct prediction adds one point to your score. The streak continues to grow until you make an incorrect Higher or Lower call. Build the longest streak and keep improving your best across the different categories.
How to Play
Choose your category before beginning an Unlimited sequence. The first player appears with their Premier League total. A second player then appears without their statistic being shown. Decide whether the second player's total is Higher or Lower than the current player. Once you make your choice, the answer is revealed. If you are correct, the sequence continues. In Unlimited, the newly revealed player becomes your next benchmark.
Players with identical totals are not paired together, so every comparison will always have a clear Higher or Lower answer.
Tips
Longevity. A player with 12 Premier League seasons may comfortably rank higher than a more famous player who only spent five years in England.
Reputation. The more difficult comparisons often involve players whose totals are much closer than you might expect, so reputation alone is not always enough.
Position. Traditional defenders are more likely to build higher appearance totals, while creative midfielders are naturally more likely to record more assists.
Era. More recent players can post stronger numbers in some categories, but their totals may also be affected by shorter Premier League careers or more opportunities to play abroad.
Daily vs Unlimited
The two modes test slightly different skills. Daily is about overall accuracy. Every question counts and one mistake does not stop you from completing the challenge. Unlimited is about consistency. One wrong decision ends the sequence, so maintaining a long streak becomes progressively harder. Results from Unlimited do not change your official Daily Recall Score.
Why Higher or Lower Gets Difficult
The challenge is not simply knowing who the better footballer was. Higher or Lower compares measurable Premier League career totals, which can produce some surprising match-ups. That unpredictability is what makes the game work.
Reporting Incorrect Data
We aim to keep every player statistic used in Higher or Lower accurate. If you believe an appearance, goal or assist total is incorrect, use Report a Bug and include the player name, category and figure you believe needs reviewing.
