What is League Ladder?
League Ladder is one of the original games on FootyRecall, built around how well you remember final Premier League tables since the league began.
Rather than simply naming and guessing teams from a particular season, this game focuses on your ability to complete sections of the final standings. You are shown part of the table with gaps, and your job is to not only remember the teams in that section, but exactly where they finished.
It sounds simple, but remembering who finished 7th rather than 8th in a season from ten or fifteen years ago can be much harder than it looks.
League Ladder tests more than just the biggest clubs. It rewards your memory of entire seasons, from title races and European qualification battles to teams fighting further down the table.
Gameplay Overview
Each League Ladder challenge is based on a completed Premier League season. A section of the table is shown with several clubs removed.
Using the teams and information already visible, you need to place the missing clubs into the positions you think they finished. Once you are happy with your choices, submit a Ladder Check.
Green means the club is in the correct position.
Yellow means the club belongs somewhere in the selected section, but you have placed it in the wrong position.
Red means the club does not belong in that section of the table.
Correct clubs lock into place, while any remaining gaps can be attempted again.
Game Modes
Daily Challenge
The Daily Challenge gives every FootyRecall player the same League Ladder. The aim is to complete the missing positions using as little help as possible. Every unresolved club begins at its maximum value, with additional information revealed after incorrect checks.
Your performance is converted into a League Ladder score worth up to 25 Recall Points, which contributes towards your overall Daily Recall Score. The Daily Challenge can be completed once per day.
Unlimited
Unlimited mode is built for players who want to keep testing their Premier League table knowledge. You can choose the type of ladder you want to face, including the era and area of the table, or leave the options open for a completely random challenge.
You begin with three lives. Each incorrect Ladder Check costs one life, while additional clues are gradually revealed to help you complete the table.
Finish the ladder before all three lives are gone, then generate another and go again.
Choosing Your Ladder
One of the biggest differences in League Ladder Unlimited is the ability to control the kind of challenge you face.
Era
You can select an era of Premier League history, allowing you to focus on periods you feel stronger in or areas you want to improve. Selecting Any produces ladders from across any period of Premier League history.
Table Area
You can also choose which part of the league table you want to be tested on. Some sections naturally contain more memorable teams than others. Traditionally, users may find the top and bottom of Premier League tables easier to remember, so attempting to complete the middle sections can really push your knowledge.
Understanding the Feedback
The feedback system is one of the most important parts of League Ladder.
Green
A Green answer means you have placed the correct club in the correct league position. That club is locked into the ladder and no longer needs to be changed.
Yellow
A Yellow answer means the club did finish somewhere within the section you are completing, but not in the position where you placed it. Your instincts are correct, but the position needs adjusting.
Red
A Red answer means the club did not finish anywhere within the section being shown. That team needs to be replaced entirely.
Using the feedback from one Ladder Check to improve the next is a major part of the game.
Clues and Progression
League Ladder becomes easier as more clues are revealed, but relying on those clues reduces the value of your answers in the Daily Challenge.
At the beginning, you are given the least information. After an incorrect check, additional table data begins to appear.
The first clue reveals the league points recorded by the missing teams. If another incorrect check is needed, goal difference is also revealed.
The aim is to solve as much of the ladder as possible before needing those additional clues.
Scoring & Results
Daily Scoring
Each missing club begins with a maximum raw value of 3 points. A correct answer on your first Ladder Check earns all 3 points for that position.
After the first incorrect check, the available value for unresolved clubs drops to 2 points and league points are revealed for all remaining clubs in the table. After another incorrect check, the remaining value falls to 1 point, with goal difference also available as a clue.
If a position remains unresolved after the final attempt, the correct club is revealed and that position scores 0. Your total score is then converted into a maximum of 25 Recall Points towards your overall Daily Recall Score.
Unlimited Scoring
Unlimited mode works differently. Instead of scoring each club out of three, the challenge is about completing the ladder while protecting your lives.
Each incorrect Ladder Check costs one life. Correct clubs lock into place and the remaining gaps stay open for another attempt. Complete the ladder before your lives run out to finish the challenge successfully.
Unlimited results do not affect your official Daily Recall Score.
The Data
League Ladder uses final Premier League standings from completed seasons. The data includes each club's final league position, points total and goal difference where required by the game.
FootyRecall's table database is reviewed as more seasons and game combinations are added. If you believe a club, league position, points total or goal difference is incorrect, you can report it through the Report a Bug option.
How to Play
Choose your preferred era and table area in Unlimited mode, or leave either option on Any for a random ladder.
When the table is revealed, look at the clubs already shown and the gaps you need to fill. Make a guess for each position using the team you believe finished there. Once every position has an answer, submit a Ladder Check.
After the check, teams will turn Green, Yellow or Red depending on where they actually finished. Use this feedback to work out what needs changing.
Continue until the full ladder is complete or, in Unlimited mode, all three lives have been lost.
Tips
Look at the teams around the gaps. Sometimes remembering who finished immediately above or below a club is easier than remembering the exact position itself.
Think about the season as a whole. Title races, European qualification and relegation battles can all help place teams into the right part of the table.
Use Yellow answers carefully. A Yellow club is already confirmed as belonging somewhere in the section. Moving those teams around logically can often solve several positions at once.
Don't rely only on reputation. A traditionally bigger club may have had a poor season, while a smaller club may have finished much higher than you remember.
Use the clues together. Once points and goal difference are revealed, compare them with the clubs you remember from that season rather than treating each figure in isolation.
Daily vs Unlimited
The two modes test the same core skill but reward slightly different approaches.
The Daily Challenge is about accuracy and tests how well you can recall the table without needing additional information. The earlier you solve the positions, the stronger your possible score.
Unlimited is more forgiving in terms of scoring, but you only have three lives. The challenge is simply to complete the ladder before your mistakes run out.
Daily results contribute towards your official Daily Recall Score. Unlimited games are for practice and repeated play.
Why League Ladder Gets Difficult
League Ladder doesn't just test your knowledge and memory of which teams have played in the Premier League, it tests just how accurately you remember where they finished.
You might remember that a certain team had a strong finish to the season, or that another was fighting relegation, but League Ladder tests whether you can remember the exact finishing positions. Several teams can finish within only a few points of one another, making the middle of the table particularly difficult to rebuild from memory.
Older seasons can be even more difficult, as they feature teams that are no longer regular contenders in the Premier League and aren't sides you see every week today. That uncertainty is what makes League Ladder work.
Reporting Incorrect Data
We aim to keep every Premier League table used in League Ladder accurate. If you believe there is an error in the final standings or a team's information is incorrect, use Report a Bug and include the season and the information you believe needs reviewing.
