What is Missing Men?
Missing Men is built around how well you remember Premier League line-ups from memorable fixtures.
You are shown a completed Premier League match with both starting XIs on screen, but with several players from both sides removed. Using your knowledge of the clubs, player positions and the fixture itself, your job is to work out who is missing and rebuild the teams.
Probably the most difficult game mode on FootyRecall, Missing Men doesn't just test your knowledge of a club's historical players, but whether you can remember who featured in a specific game and season.
The scoreline, opposition, season and players already shown can all help jog your memory, but some line-ups are much harder to reconstruct than others.
Gameplay Overview
Each Missing Men challenge is based on a real Premier League fixture.
The two starting line-ups are shown with a number of players removed from both sides. The structure of each team remains visible, while the players already shown can help you work out who belongs in each gap.
Select a blank position and search for the player you believe started that match.
Once you are happy with your choices, submit the line-up. Correct players lock into place, while incorrect answers remain unresolved and can be attempted again.
As the challenge continues, additional clues are revealed to help identify the remaining players.
Game Modes
Daily Challenge
The Daily Challenge gives every FootyRecall player the same Missing Men fixture. Each missing player begins at their maximum value, meaning the earlier you identify them, the more points they are worth.
Correct answers on your first attempt receive the full available score. If you need additional attempts, clues are gradually revealed while the value of the remaining players decreases.
Your final Missing Men result is converted into a maximum of 25 Recall Points, which contributes towards your overall Daily Recall Score. The Daily Challenge can be completed once per day.
Unlimited
Unlimited mode allows you to keep testing yourself across different Premier League fixtures.
You begin each challenge with three lives. Fill the missing positions and submit your line-up. Correct players lock into place, while an incorrect check costs one life and reveals additional information to help with the remaining gaps.
Unlimited results do not affect your official Daily Recall Score.
Reading the Line-Up
Missing Men is not just about remembering a list of players from a particular team. The layout of the line-up can also provide important clues.
Each missing player appears in the position they occupied in the starting XI, while the players already revealed help give you context around the team.
Think about the formation, which players regularly started together and where certain players were usually used during that season.
Sometimes remembering the shape of the team can be just as useful as remembering the fixture itself.
Clues and Progression
The more attempts you need, the more information Missing Men gives you.
In the Daily Challenge, each missing player begins worth 3 raw points.
After the first unsuccessful attempt, an additional clue is revealed for the unresolved players and their available value falls to 2 points.
After another unsuccessful attempt, a further clue becomes available and the remaining players are worth 1 point.
If a player is still unresolved after the final attempt, the correct answer is revealed and that position scores 0.
Scoring & Results
Daily Scoring
Each missing player begins with a maximum value of 3 points. A correct answer on your first attempt earns all 3 points for that position.
If you need another attempt, the value available for unresolved players drops to 2 points. After another incorrect attempt, their available value falls to 1 point.
If the final answer has to be revealed, that player receives 0 points. Your total raw score is then converted into a maximum of 25 Recall Points towards your overall Daily Recall Score.
Correct players remain locked in, so once you identify someone successfully, you do not need to enter them again.
Unlimited Scoring
Unlimited works differently. Rather than building a points total for each player, the objective is to complete the entire line-up while protecting your three lives.
Every incorrect line-up check costs one life. Complete every missing position before your three lives are gone to successfully finish the fixture.
The Data
Missing Men uses real Premier League starting line-ups from completed fixtures. The game is based on the players who officially started that fixture.
Fixture information, team selections and supporting player data are reviewed as more matches are added to the FootyRecall database.
If you believe a player, position, fixture or piece of supporting information is incorrect, you can report it through the Report a Bug option.
How to Play
Use the fixture information and pre-populated starting line-ups provided to you.
Select one of the gaps and search for the player you believe started the match. Continue until you have made an attempt at every missing position.
Once you are happy with your selections, submit your line-up. Correct players will lock into place, while any incorrect answers remain open for another attempt.
Additional clues become available as the game progresses. Continue until the line-up is complete or, in Unlimited mode, all three lives have been lost.
Tips
Use the players already shown. Seeing the rest of the starting XI can often help you remember who regularly played alongside them.
Think about the season. A player may be strongly associated with a club but might not have joined yet, may already have left, or may not have been a regular starter during that particular campaign.
Pay attention to position. If the missing player is shown in defence, midfield or attack, use that information to narrow down the possible answer.
Remember the fixture. Big matches, memorable scorelines and important moments can often make a particular starting XI easier to recall.
Do not rely entirely on reputation. Famous players did not start every game. Injuries, rotation and form can produce some surprisingly difficult line-ups.
Daily vs Unlimited
Both modes test the same core skill: how accurately you remember Premier League starting line-ups.
The Daily Challenge rewards early accuracy. Identifying players before additional clues are revealed gives you the strongest possible score.
Unlimited is about completing the fixture before your mistakes run out. You have three lives, and every incorrect check brings you one step closer to the end of the challenge.
Why Missing Men Gets Difficult
Missing Men does not just test whether you remember which players were at a club. It tests whether you remember who actually started one specific Premier League match.
You might clearly remember a player being part of the squad that season, but they may have been injured, suspended, rotated or left on the bench for that particular fixture.
Older matches become even more challenging, especially when squad players, short-term signings or less memorable starters appear alongside the names everyone remembers.
Sometimes one missing player comes back instantly. Sometimes a familiar line-up can leave you staring at one final gap for far longer than you expected. That is what makes Missing Men work.
Reporting Incorrect Data
We aim to keep every fixture and starting line-up used in Missing Men accurate. If you believe a player, starting position, fixture or piece of supporting information is incorrect, use Report a Bug and include the match and the information you believe needs reviewing.
