What is Who Wore It?
Who Wore It? is built around how well you remember the players who have worn specific shirt numbers for Premier League clubs.
You are shown a timeline of recent players who have worn the same shirt number for one club, with several names removed. Your job is to work out which players are missing and rebuild the sequence.
The challenge is not just remembering famous names. It tests your knowledge of squad history, player eras and how shirt numbers changed over time.
Some timelines are straightforward, while others can be surprisingly difficult when short-term signings, squad players or less memorable wearers are involved.
Gameplay Overview
Each Who Wore It? challenge is based on one Premier League club and one shirt number.
A sequence of recent wearers is shown in order, with several player names hidden.
Using the players already visible, the club, shirt number and the order of the timeline, you need to work out who belongs in each missing position.
Select a blank and enter the player you believe wore that number at that point in the sequence.
Correct answers lock into place, while incorrect answers remain unresolved and can be attempted again.
As the challenge continues, additional clues are revealed to help identify the remaining players.
Game Modes
Daily Challenge
The Daily Challenge gives every FootyRecall player the same Who Wore It? timeline.
Each missing player begins at their maximum value, meaning the earlier you identify them, the more points they are worth.
Correct answers on your first attempt receive the full available score. If you need additional attempts, clues are gradually revealed while the value of the unresolved players decreases.
Your final Who Wore It? result is converted into a maximum of 25 Recall Points, which contributes towards your overall Daily Recall Score.
The Daily Challenge can be completed once per day.
Unlimited
Unlimited mode allows you to keep testing your knowledge across different clubs, shirt numbers and player timelines.
You can continue generating new challenges and work through as many timelines as you like.
Each timeline follows the same core format, with missing players to identify and progressive clues available when needed.
Unlimited results do not affect your official Daily Recall Score.
Reading the Timeline
Who Wore It? is not just about knowing which players wore a particular number.
The order of the timeline is one of the biggest clues available to you.
Look at the players already shown and think about when they were at the club, which seasons they played in and who came before or after them.
If you know one player joined in a particular year and another left shortly afterwards, that can help narrow down the missing name between them.
Sometimes working out the period is easier than remembering the player immediately.
Clues and Progression
The more attempts you need, the more information Who Wore It? gives you.
In the Daily Challenge, each missing player begins worth 3 raw points.
After the first unsuccessful attempt, an additional clue is revealed and the available value for that player drops to 2 points.
After another unsuccessful attempt, a further clue becomes available and the remaining value drops to 1 point.
If the player is still unresolved after the final attempt, the correct answer is revealed and that position scores 0.
The aim is to identify as many missing players as possible before relying on the extra information.
Scoring & Results
Daily Scoring
Each missing player begins with a maximum value of 3 points.
A correct answer on your first attempt earns all 3 points for that position.
If you need another attempt, the available value drops to 2 points. After another incorrect attempt, the value falls to 1 point.
If the final answer has to be revealed, that player receives 0 points.
Your total raw score is then converted into a maximum of 25 Recall Points towards your overall Daily Recall Score.
Correct players remain locked in, so once you identify someone successfully, you do not need to enter them again.
Unlimited Scoring
Unlimited mode is built around repeated play rather than your official Daily Recall Score.
Complete the missing names, use clues when needed and move on to the next club and shirt-number timeline.
The aim is to test how much shirt-number history you can remember across different teams and eras.
Unlimited results do not affect your Daily Recall Score.
The Data
Who Wore It? uses shirt-number history from Premier League clubs and players.
The game is based on recorded squad numbers and the order in which players wore them for each club.
Supporting information, including appearances and nationality where used as clues, is reviewed as the FootyRecall database expands.
If you believe a player, shirt number, club, appearance total or piece of supporting information is incorrect, you can report it through the Report a Bug option.
How to Play
Use the club, shirt number and players already shown in the timeline.
Look at each missing position and think about which player wore that number during that period.
Select a blank and enter the player you believe belongs there.
Continue until you have attempted every missing position.
Correct players lock into place, while incorrect answers remain open for another attempt.
Additional clues become available as the challenge progresses. Continue until the full timeline has been completed.
Tips
Use the order of the timeline. Knowing who came before and after a missing player can be more useful than trying to remember the shirt number in isolation.
Think about transfer periods. If you remember when a player joined or left a club, you can often narrow down where they belong in the sequence.
Remember squad-number changes. Some players changed shirt numbers during their time at a club, so being associated with one number does not always mean they wore it throughout their entire stay.
Do not rely only on the biggest names. Some shirt numbers have been worn by short-term signings, academy players or less memorable squad members.
Use appearances as context. When the appearance clue is revealed, think about whether the player was a regular starter, squad option or someone who only featured briefly.
Use nationality to narrow the field. Once nationality is revealed, combine it with the era and surrounding players to reduce the possible answers.
Daily vs Unlimited
Both modes test the same core skill: how well you remember the history of Premier League shirt numbers.
The Daily Challenge rewards early accuracy. Identifying players before additional clues are revealed gives you the strongest possible score.
Unlimited is designed for repeated play. Keep generating different club and shirt-number combinations and see how many timelines you can complete.
Daily results contribute towards your official Daily Recall Score. Unlimited games are for practice and repeated play.
Why Who Wore It? Gets Difficult
Who Wore It? can look simple when the shirt number belongs to a famous player, but the real challenge comes from remembering the full history behind it.
A number may be strongly associated with one club legend, even though several other players wore it before or after them.
Transfers, squad changes and players switching numbers can all make a timeline harder to rebuild than expected.
Older sequences can be particularly difficult when players only spent a short time at the club or made relatively few appearances.
You might instantly recognise six names and still struggle with the one player who wore the shirt for a single season.
That uncertainty is what makes Who Wore It? work.
Reporting Incorrect Data
We aim to keep every shirt-number timeline used in Who Wore It? accurate. If you believe a player, shirt number, club, order or piece of supporting information is incorrect, use Report a Bug and include the club, shirt number and the information you believe needs reviewing.
