Christos Tzolis: Arsenal bought the diagonal, not a touchline dribbler
Arsenal have converted a high-volume scorer and supplier into the left-sided trigger for a precise diagonal passing pattern.

The player and the role
Arsenal use Tzolis as a fast-processing wide playmaker. He starts high and wide on the left while their established Saka, Ødegaard, White and Havertz connections pull the block towards the right. Calafiori then attacks inside Tzolis. When the switch arrives, the winger's task is often one carry infield and one diagonal pass, not a long isolation duel.

How they play
The same picture has hurt Manchester City and Chelsea. Tzolis receives outside the full-back, Calafiori makes an inside run that occupies a defender, Havertz threatens or dummies across the line, and Ødegaard arrives beyond the disrupted block. Tzolis supplies the diagonal through that movement. Against Napoli he appeared on the right before assisting Ødegaard. He is attached to the attacking triangle, not the touchline.
What the numbers tell us
His league balance is 0.19 xG against 0.55 xA. Across the Community Shield, Champions League and EFL Cup, he has added three assists. Among 56 FPL-listed midfielders aged 22 to 26, his xG per 90 ranks 45th and his xA ranks 27th. Five starts say Arsenal trust the structure, even if the individual volume is modest.
How the role has evolved
Club Brugge used him as a much larger attacking hub: 17 goals, 23 assists, 359 progressive carries and 135 chances created in the league. However, 52 chances came from set plays. Arsenal have removed much of that ownership and converted the scorer-supplier into a specialist open-play connector.

- 56 midfielders, age 22 to 26
- His 0.55 xA points towards the new supplying role.
Where they can improve
Tzolis is not an elite separation dribbler. A full-back who closes him tightly can stall the action if Calafiori and the central runners fail to move the next defender.
What we’re watching next
Watch the opponent's choice. Close the diagonal and Calafiori should be freed; protect Calafiori and Tzolis should face forward.
